Identity Fraud and You

Saturday, August 23, 2008

Identity Fraud is one of the United States largest problems. Identity Fraud is done for many reasons besides trying to get someone's credit. But, Identity Theft will be the main focus of this post. An identity that has been stolen usually goes unnoticed for quite sometime. With the implementation of The Fair Credit Reporting Act, consumer's now are aloud to receive one (1) Free Credit Report a year from each any Consumer Reporting Agency. Besides your one allowed Free Report a year, The Fair Credit Reporting Act also allows the consumer a credit report from an agency when that agencies information was used to deny you for any line of credit.

The government has implemented many regulations that govern anything from the way a creditor is allowed to offer a line of credit to how the collections of the debt may be handled. There is a lot of subjects I could go over at the moment but the main concern is Identity Fraud.

Identity Fraud is something that may happen to any of us no matter how safe we are. This is do to the security flaws that are in todays Technologies and the lack of testing configurations when server's are setup. This has been one of the biggest reasons for the loss of personal information is because companies are not making sure all there information is secure from search engine spiders. So in turn the spiders read the information stored in the unprotected files and directories and give access to it to the world. In the past five years 3 of the biggest security breach's where personal information such as Social Security Numbers, Names, Address', and credit card information has been taken.

The instances mentioned above could have been avoided if the companies that we deal with on a day to day basis, and hold all of our personal information, would just take a little extra time to make sure things are set correctly. This would reduce the risk of Identity Fraud drastically. I myself have tried some of the google hacks that will actually bring up the personal information of others if it's indexed with there systems, and information pulled up. Most of the information I had gotten on my search was only information regarding the 3 breach's from the past. But some old information I did find. It was in the systems cache information. The little green link on google under the search results. The information was nothing usable to a major extent. The information I did find was name and address'.

Make sure any company you give you personal information to such as credit card numbers and Social Security Numbers are secured from when your information is given to them. Granted no security is 100% but with proper precautions in place and security updates regularly Identity Fraud will be cut down to such an extent that worrying about it will be yesterdays news.
